Description
James Clarence Mangan, Collected Works: Prose 1832-1839 and Prose 1840-1882. Edited by Jacques Chuto, Peter Van de Kamp, Augustine Martin, and Ellen Shannon-Mangan. Dublin and Portland, Oregon: Irish Academic Press, 2002. xiii + 398 pages; xiii + 378 pages. No price given. In Autumn-Winter 2000 I reviewed in this journal six volumes of Mangan's Collected Works. Four of those volumes provide us at last with a scholarly edition of Mangan's poems, some identified as his for the first time, and solve many vexing problems created by Mangan's habit of sometimes labelling his own poems as translations from German or Turkish or Croatian. Thanks to the late Augustine Martin and his team of editors, we now have as much as we are ever likely to have of what Mangan actually wrote and can properly begin to evaluate his lonely achievement. Two more volumes contain a detailed bibliography and Ellen Shannon-Mangan's valuable biography of the poet.
